Rwanda is known as the land of a thousand hills due to its mountainous / hilly topography. Rwanda is situated in the Virunga crescent with a clear view of Mountain Mgahinga, Mountain Sabyonyo, Mountain Karisoke/ Visoke and Mountain Kasimbi – Virunga ranges and on clear days, you can view peaks of the mentioned mountains.
Due to Rwanda’s mountainous nature, the environment is favorable for the survival of mountain Gorillas – today, Rwanda hosts ten habituated mountain Gorillas found in the mighty Volcanoes national Park. The habituated gorilla groups include Susa gorilla group, Karisimbi gorilla family, Sabyinyo Gorilla group, Amahoro Group, Umubano gorilla group, 13 group (aka Agasha group), Hirwa group, Bwenge gorilla family, Ugenda family and Kwitonda group- on the other hand more are yet to be habituated.
Gorilla habituation is meant to familiarize gorillas to human beings hence Gorilla trekking. Many tourists storm Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) for Gorilla trekking/ tracking – then stay in safari lodges near the park a day before or after the gorilla trek. Travelers to Rwanda have a chance to choose the form of accommodation based on his/ her budget and interest – you can choose to stay in a luxury, mid- range or Budget Gorilla Lodge. They are called Gorilla Lodges because they accommodate Gorilla trekkers.
